Rocklands topos

Last updated on 23rd September 2009

Anyone who has bouldered in Rocklands will know that half the effort of bouldering here is finding the problems.

Although Rocklands was established in 1997, 12 years on and there is still no official guide book.  For a number of years there was much anticipation for the guide that Scott Noy was making but although some people have had the privelege of glancing at his work-in-progress there is still no official publish date.

Development in Rocklands continues, in 2009 the establishment of new areas included 'De Hagen aka The South African area' established by Guy Holwill, the 'Champagne area' established by Chuck Fryberger and Nalle Hakkataival, 'Lorraine' and 'Ernies' established by Walker Emerson, Jesse Brown, Simon Fitting, Collin Horvat and Anthony Chertudi as well as 'Hoeksonderkoffie' established by Scott Noy.

The problem for the average boulderer in Rocklands is in finding these new areas.  We hear about a fabulous new line but seldom have the information required to find it.  Before the Rocklands Boulders website was established some topos were scattered around the Internet but boulderers mostly relied on word-of-mouth and hand drawn sketches of an area.

This year we've had an extraordinary amount of help in topo drawing and whilst some information may not be entirely accurate Rocklands Boulders has published them in any case.  By publishing them we hope to get feedback that will improve the accuracy of the information over time.  It is after all a process that has to start somewhere.

So a big shout out to Guy and Walker & co for taking the time to draw topos and thus begin the process of recording accurate information as well as giving us the opportunity to enjoy some of the great lines in Rocklands.

The following digital topos were submitted this season (see the related links panel on the right) as well as hand drawings of 'Lorraine', 'Kleinfontein' and 'Champage area' submitted by Walker & co and Chuck Fryberger which will be digitally drawn and put up in due course (watch this space)!
