Rockstock IV

Last updated on 2010-08-20

To use the Americanism - "It was Awesome" .... The fun started at 20:00 Saturday evening and most patrons were still Rockstocking away at 5:00 am the next morning!!

On the 8th of August 2010 one hundred and fifty climbers from all over Rocklands gathered for Rockstock IV, the annual bash to celebrate the season (started by local Justin Hawkins four years ago). Previous years sound systems were returned to rental companies in various pieces, speakers still sticky from a misplaced brandy or two, but this year went surprisingly smoothly.

The food consists of two lambs left to roast on a spit most of the day, and heaps of other local dishes to start off the evening. Once everyone’s bellies have grown to their full potential and the plates stand empty, the World Airstar Championship starts. This world-renowned event entails getting up on stage and putting on a performance, both for the crowd and the judges. There are no rules or restrictions of any kind, with as prize the three foot Joseph Malbos trophy. The contest was opened by the children from the local primary school (Elizibethfontein) with a traditional Gumboot dance, after which Vittorio Mangusto (Cody Roth) kindly stepped up to the mic as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

After two hours of acts the judges (Mark and Thys, De Pakhuys) worked it down to four finalists, first place going to Ziggy Stardust (Matthieu Saulnier) , who concluded the competition, winning over the crowd with his uncanny resemblance to David Bowie and all-round brilliant performance.

A Special thank you goes out to all our climbing friends and all the performers who made Rockstock happen this year!
